Residents of a small American town have recently been deprived of Wi-Fi City at the request of the MPAA and Sony Pictures Entertainment because of a surfer caught illegally downloading a movie. Given the powerful association of defense of the American film industry, which represents major Hollywood studios, the municipality was completed without further ado.

This Wi-Fi was available for 11 000 residents of Coshocton for five years and used daily by hundreds of people, including the police for sending and receiving reports from the field. “It’s unfortunate for those who use the service honestly one person has ruined everything,” was also outraged the commissioner of the city, whose remarks were reported by a local newspaper.

This decision has caused inordinate rightly a media outcry. Faced with the absurdity of the situation, Jim Kennedy, vice president for communications at Sony Pictures Entertainment, wrote to the county and asked what access points are reconnected, while offering help to prevent future fraudulent use their access to the Internet, without elaborating.

Facing a similar situation in France and in the context of the Hadopi, we are sure the judge would “take into account the circumstances and severity of the offense” to make a decision more relevant.
