The manufacturer of semiconductors Intel has completed the acquisition of nearly 200 patents from RealNetworks.
RealNetworks, specializes in developing multimedia software, today announced having sold ” a considerable number of patents and its next-generation video codec, to Intel. No specific information has been provided, however, the exact nature of these patents. The manufacturer would have provided $120 million to grant themselves rights to these various technologies. In total, the transaction will include 190 patents approved by the USPTO and 170 others are currently under review.
Renee James, Intel vice president and general manager of the division software and Services, said in an official statement that the acquisition of this new intellectual property and the video codec will help develop more innovative solutions to a wide range of devices and in particular on ultrabooks and smartphones. Meanwhile RealNetworks satisfied with this sale. This transaction will enable the company to increase its investment and new markets. Note that through this agreement, the company retains exploitation rights for patents sold allowing it to secure its portfolio of existing software.
