While AMD had launched simultaneously Radeon HD 6970 and 6950 in December 2010, we have not heard, a month after the launch of the Radeon HD 7970 , the future Radeon HD 7950. Two websites, however, broke the silence, one with two photos from a reference, the other with interesting technical information.
The famous Turkish website DonanimHaber, which must be a multitude of leaks that have come true, would actually put their hands on the operating frequency of the “Radeon HD 7950″, and the results of a performance test. The “AMD Radeon HD 7950″ is therefore based on a variant equipped with 1792 processing units of the chip Tahiti, against that of 2048 to 7970, clocked at 800 MHz, 925 MHz against the latter. There are 3 GB of GDDR5 memory with 384 bits interfaced, as in 7970, but operating at 1250 MHz to 1375 MHz and not. Tahiti forces, would be found in any PCI-Express 3.0 and features inaugurated on 7970. In practice, a “Radeon HD 7950″ would get 2385 points in 3DMark 11 in Extreme mode, against 2635 for the Radeon HD 7970 and 2081 to the GeForce GTX 580.
The photos published by OBR hardware show for their connectivity identical to that of 7970, with two DVI, two mini DisplayPort outputs and one HDMI output. However, it is question of a cooling system but also and especially of an electronic circuit board (PCB) dedicated, likely eliminating any chance of turning a Radeon HD 7950 in 7970, as one could do with the Radeon HD 6900 . Finally , there is even talk of a retail price of $ 450, $ 100 less than the Radeon HD 7970. This leaves only to know the launch date!
